 A Shadowed Land

The forest was a silent oblivion, not even a bird's call disturbed the
unnatural passiveness of the forest floor. Thick tree trunks spread
among the massive berry bushes. The tree's bark rose high into the
air and their sheltering arms spread into the sky, billions of turning
leaves shielding the sun from the forest floor. A tiny breeze that
seemed to come from no where caused the many bushels of berries
to quiver, some of their tiny fruit dropping to the ground.

The small narrow feminine stared up looking at the turning leaves.
They shifted lightly, their many shades of fall colors blurring into one
colorful scheme of brightness. The wolf found herself staring for
sometime, lost in the sudden peacefulness of nothing. The quiet
seemed to calm her; all she could smell as trees and berries. No
wolves came here nor did any other animal.

Can I eat berries forever? She asked herself as she lowered
her head to gaze at some of the many fallen berries. Are they
even editable?
She wondered but before she could think of the
possibility of them being poisonous she dropped her head to the
ground. Their flavor was plain, almost bland until her canines
pinched the small fruit. They popped in a strange manner and
then her mouth flared with a strange sense of sweetness. Another
flavor hit her tongue and her visage twisted in surprise. She had
never tasted something sour before but she knew that the berries
were. It wasn't bad though, just unexpected.

She raised her head, pink tongue flickering out to lick the strange
juices of this new fruit off her lips. She was not satisfied by the few
berries she had but she was too curious to stay here eating. She
also doubted that even if she got ravenously hungry that she
wouldn't be able to find these bushes again. They were
everywhere! As far as her auburn eyes could see she saw the
berries. So she continued on, dodging the bushes as she went.
Though, as she continued on a scent entered her senses. Her face
twisted in the sudden realization that she wasn't safe anymore
and flinched away from the scent.

She couldn't get away from them, she couldn't get away from her
own kin. All she wanted to do was live, even if it meant eating
these sweet berries for all of her life. She wouldn't steal their food
any longer, she wouldn't hide in their territory. She has said to
herself that she would hide. It didn't seem as though she
would get that solitude though. In her sudden fear her tail tucked
and she fled, leaving the unmistakable scent of wolf, coyote, and
fear.

Autumn, it was the most colorful season there was. Leaves both on the tree and off were multi-colored, orange, red, yellow, green. The grasses were golden in color and the sky bright blue with white clouds. It was grand, but for those who sought after a life of solitude, it was not the kind of place they would stay in for long.

How long had it been since he last saw another wolf? For almost six months he had managed to avoid all contact with the wolves. Hopefully it would stay that way. To ensure that he would not run into another he had to move from the rock formation he had laid himself upon. Deer had started to gather which meant wolves would soon come. Quickly and silently he got to his feet and climbed down the rocks, leaving his post and the beautiful scenery. It was time to move himself to a place very few, if any, would be found. He was heading east, to a dark looking forest.

Upon entering the forest the entire landscape seemed to change. No longer did the sun's rays heat his reddish brown body. No longer did the golden grasses tickle his legs. Instead the ground was bare and the sun could not make it through the thick canopy. Instead of a brilliant array of colors the bushes here were either a deep or light green with a vast variety of colored berries. This was another kind of beautiful, one that you would like to see but never stay long in.

The forest was silent, a perfect place for the young wolf to seek solitude. Cautiously he walked further into the forest, ears alert for any sounds not made by him. When he no longer could see the light from his entrance point in the forest he stood still, scenting the air for signs of life. Lips pulled back and teeth clenched at the scent that filled his nostrils. The scent was that of a wolf but it wasn't a pure wolf however, he knew it was not the same scent a wolf dog would leave behind either. A low growl admitted from his vocals at the thought of a half blood. They were never to be trusted, no matter what.

Slowly his large pads continued to carry him further into the forest. Golden eyes darted back and forth, scanning the poorly lit forest for any other life. Once found he would destroy them like he had with those wolves. Sadly it didn't take long for him to spot a moving figure. Standing his ground his hair rose and a growl began to fill the air once again.

The figure was rather thin compared to him, and much smaller. The female was almost the same color as he was except she was more red. She looked like a wolf but there was something different about her, just like with all half bloods. His eyes were filled with hatred for the beast before him, even though he had yet to meet her, she was his enemy.

The fur on her back rose as an oral sound pierced through the quiet
oblivion she had created in her mind. The sound made her jerk to a
stop even though it should have made her run faster. She should be
running, running as fast as she could to save her life but she did not.
The feminine turned, her thin frame shaking in a primal fear. The
sound that the other had voiced was a growl, a fierce snarl, a sound
of hatred, not of fear or curiosity. Her auburn eyes then swept to look
at the wolf. For a brief moment her eyes met his, his eyes filled with
such hate. The raw emotion of hate that was directed straight at her
shocked her silly; in confusion and fear she backed up, tripping on a
fallen stick.

The feminine's breath came out in ragged pants, her ears flattening
against her skull. Her eyes were still locked on his and it was as if
she couldn't break free. Is this what my mother saw in the wolf
that killed her?
She asked herself, shaken suddenly by the idea
that this could be the wolf that would kill her. I can't die, not like
this, not when I've tried so hard to hide.
She felt wetness on her
muzzle but paid not attention to it as she teared her eyes from his.
Suddenly free from his gaze she turned for good, running from those
glaring eyes, that growling maw, from the killer - Her killer.

Lips curled into a devilish smile as he smelt the half blood's fear. Muscles tensed as he prepared himself for the chase he knew was to come. As their eyes met he could see the fear in her eyes, he watched as she had trouble tearing her eyes from his. She looked like a deer who was about to be hit by an oncoming car. He stood his ground opening his mouth slightly to show off his large fangs as he continued to growl. Claws dug into the ground, preparing himself for flight. He could feel it inside of him, he knew she was about to run. As she turned and ran off he chuckled to himself, this time it could be heard. It was the chase that excited him the most and he wanted to drag it out as long as he could. Watching her run he counted to five before taking off after her.

The chase had begun. If she had been a wolf he would of simply turned around and let her be. But no, she was a half blood. Dogs like her didn't deserve to live. He ran at a normal pace until the dog was in his sights again. As soon as he spotted her form he began to push himself to run faster. He ran at an angel, not directly behind her or going the same path. There was no way he was going to let this half blood escape. He was going to destroy her like he did the rest of his enemies. Not much thought was being put into this, he wasn't even paying attention to his surroundings like he usually was; his only focus was her. It really was sad how like his father he was, this was almost exactly his father's attitude towards his mother except his goal was to rape her not kill her.

As the feminine turned to run she heard the soft chuckle, as if the
other expected this from her. Her breath whooshed out, knowing
despite the effort she was about to exert he would be able to easily
catch her if her chased her. She hoped, despite the obvious signs,
that he would not follow, that he would leave her alone. She dropped
her head, adrenaline induced fear coursing through her veins,
pushing her to run faster then her legs could really handle.

For a moment it seemed as though he wasn't following but then she
realized he had given her a few seconds head start. A sick feeling
settles in her center, making her want to give up and just let her
inevitable death be done with. She was being hunted, like an animal
that didn't deserve to live. Not like deer who are killed for a use, no,
wolves don't snarl at their food prey and give them a head start
before hunting them. This was sick, this was the type of wolf that
was going to kill her.

She tried to move faster then her thin muscled frame could handle;
she turned sharply around several thick trees, skidding past the
breed bushels of sour berries. Past everything she had hoped would
house her, hoped would hide her from all others.

He kept up after her, watching her out of the corner of his golden eyes. Following his own path had proved to be the wise choice in this chase for the dog kept having to move out of the way of oncoming trees while all he had ahead of him was clear ground. "Stupid dog..." Even though his words had not been that loud, they still came out of his mouth. It had been the first time he had spoken in over a year, the words were raspy and dry. Aside from that they were also spoken so that you could clearly hear his hatred for the half blood. Those two simple words were spoken to denigrate the female. Though he was unsure if he had been loud enough for her to hear him. His words actually shocked himself for he had forgotten he even knew how to speak. Not once when he was under Max's wing did he question him. There were very little times Max even allowed him to speak his mind, he had lost the power to make decisions for himself.

While she had to keep changing direction to avoid crashing he was able to go straight, gaining more and more speed. In no time he was able to get ahead of her, now he began running towards her at an angel to keep himself ahead. As he neared her he snarled and snapped out at her side, fangs clamped down on nothing it was done merely to frighten her. Right after he pulled his head back he pushed his body from the ground and lept toward the small dog, hoping to land on her and pin her to the ground.

The she-wolf didn't look back, didn't look for her pursuer nor did she
didn't listen for anything because she could barely hear past the
constant pounding of her heart in her ears. Then she saw him again,
suddenly in front of her, snarling and snapping at her side. Caught off
guard, she yelped and shied to the side to get away from his
snapping jaws and sharp claws. As she shied she found herself
hitting a solid tree trunk, rattling her enough that she didn't
remember that she should be running. By the time she recovered the
other wolf was already launching himself at her. She had just enough
time to roll to the side, a sudden viciousness over coming her. He
was on her but she used her back feet trying to claw at his stomach
as she bared her teeth, snapping at his throat. Then she went limp,
her viciousness evaporating into thin air, her sudden submissive
attitude causing her to shrink away into the ground.

Finding himself on top of her he was surprised that she started to defend herself. He felt her hind paws scratch at his stomach it stung slightly, suggesting that she had at least made a slight puncture wound. When she attempted to snap at his throat he snapped back at her open maw, hoping to bite down on her lip. Just as her aggression had come it was gone and she began to submit to him. For a moment his anger left him as he looked at her, she really was pathetic. But he couldn't let her off that easy, snarling he opened his mouth showing off his fangs. Thrusting his open maw forward he made it seem like he was going to maul her, but just before his fangs reached her skin he clamped them shut making a chomp sound. Lips were pulled back, revealing his fangs but no sound was escaping his vocals. The growling had stopped. Looking over her for a quick moment he pulled himself off of her and snorted. "Your not even worth it..." She wasn't a challenge she hardly fought back. It wasn't fun if they didn't fight back. That wasn't his real reason for stopping. The truth was, she didn't smell of a dog she was something else. Turning away from her he began to walk away but he stopped after only a few steps to look back at her. Hatred no longer filled his eyes, for she was no longer his enemy. The only reason he took pity on her was the fact that she stopped fighting back. Eyes lowered as he thought of his brother. Arjun had fought back at first but then he stopped if he had stopped too then maybe... Looking away from the half blood he started walking further into the forest. There was a good reason he stayed away from others and he remembered it now. He was now heading away from the wolf he had been hunting and to a small stream behind a patch of berry bushes. Though he didn't see it yet, he could smell it.

The feminine laid shaking, watching as he threatened to maul her
without words and just as it looked at though he would kill her he
stopped. His lips pulled back from his teeth and for the first time she
heard him speak. Again she felt like something less then a living
thing, she felt like a sport, the toy you play with just to get some
enjoyment out of it. And then he just got up and left, looking back at
her only once, his once hate filled eyes filled with something different.

As he turned for the final time she broke, like a wire that had been
drawn to tight. She wept loudly, a strange hatred filling her. She
hated being what she was, she hated being weak and submissive,
and part of her was sorry that she hadn't died. All her pain, all her
future pain was still ahead of her. Every aspect that made her who
she was, was still alive when she wanted it dead. She wanted to
be dead. After all the pain he had just put her through the one
thing she hoped for, the one thing she was sure was going to happen
didn't.

The despair that consumed her hardened into something else, a
sudden boiling anger that caused her muscles to quiver. He was still
walking away from her. She should be dead, he should have
killed her. the anger boiled to a new found hatred for the other.
She stood suddenly and ran after her would-be killer. She snarled,
the sound foreign to her ears. "You bastard." There
were no hesitation. "Why didn't you kill me?!" The anger
was sharp and crisp but still a hint of despair causing her voice to
shudder on the last word. She wasn't strong enough.

He hadn't even gotten that far and she decided to stand up to him again. Stopping in his tracks he began to growl again, his hair stood on end. Here he was trying to be nice and she pushes him. His head turned slightly but then he stopped. No, he wouldn't get all worked up over her. Smirking he laughed at her. Only his eyes turned to look at her. "Why don't you just kill yourself?" The way he said it made it seem like he was mocking her, which he was. With the smirk still on his face he began to walk away from her again. He doubted she was going to do anything and even if she did what did he care. As the young wolf began to walk away he stopped. Groaning to himself, Trent turned back around and headed back to the female. Looking down on her he began to growl again. "So you want to die huh?" Lowering his head their eyes became level. "Trust me, you wouldn't want me to be the one to do it." Actually, he didn't really take his time with killing he liked to get that part over with quickly. It was just, she was so much like his brother, he couldn't kill her. Sitting he studied her, he just couldn't figure it out. "So what are you anyways, half blood?" That would be her name from now on, even if she gave him her real name he would address her as half blood. He could honestly say that was the first question he ever asked in his entire life, usually he just didn't care to know but he wanted to know what she was that made her different from Max. Looking down at her it was easy to see the curiosity in his eyes. It was strange how he so quickly went from wanting to kill her to being friendly or at least as friendly as he was ever going to get. He really does take after his father.

Slowly the she-wolf drops her head, spitting the words out at the
grounds. "Do you I look like someone who would be able to do
that? I could barely attack you, how would I take my own life?"

She didn't say anything as she saw him turn again; she lifted her
head then, watching him as he struggled, deciding what to do. He
decided then to face her once more and speak again. She was
somewhat pleased, maybe she would die today.

"I don't care who kills me, I don't care how long it takes. As
long as it happens, as long as I won't be hunted any more."

Her mouth went dry halfway through as she tried to speak civilly,
as she tried to be strong. Her eyes dropped to avoid looking at his
own, she didn't want to see any emotion from him, hate, pity,
anything.

Then her eyes jerked up in surprise, they met his unexpectedly. His
eyes were not filled with hate or pity, they seemed curious. "I-"
The hesitation was back. She didn't want to say what she
was, she didn't want to admit to it. But she did. "I'm half
coyote."
Her voice was a half whisper.

Sitting quietly he waited for her to finish speaking and to answer his question before he made his own reply. When he had asked her what she was she had seemed to be shocked. When she answered his head cocked to the side in confusion. "Coyote?" Never before had he heard that word before he wasn't sure what it meant. Without giving her time to respond to his questioning word he covered up what he said with more words, this time spoken in a stern, but somehow soft voice. "Well I'm not going to be the one to end your life. You can find someone else to do that." Golden eyes studied her once again. Staying quiet he looked away from her, he found no other need for words. Getting back to his feet he began to walk away again, but before leaving behind the bushes he paused to look back. "If you don't want to be hunted you should learn to flip the tables." What he meant was instead of being hunted, she should hunt them. Turning away from her he continued on, heading towards the stream like he had before but this time he wasn't going to turn back again. As he passed the berry bushes he put her to the back of his mind. Trent was done with her, he wasnt completely sure that she wouldnt follow but he doubted it. Reaching the water he laid down at its edge letting his paws rest in the shallows of the water and his head on the dirt as he watched the rippling surface. The water here was slow and silent, he could see his reflection in the water. Staring at himself the only thing he saw was his father, the rapist that turned on his own pack. Snarling he pulled his paws from the water and half turned his body so his head was looking to the bushes instead of the water. Golden eyes stared blankly ahead of him not noticing anything around him. Once again his mind was stuck in the past, wishing he could take back all the things he had done in his life. If bringing back the dead was possible he would give his own life so that his brother could live once again. Though he was young and immature he knew this was impossible but that never stopped him from thinking about it. He was done with all of it, the killing, thinking, everything. He would stay here and rest until nightfall, then he would go back out into the field to hunt.

The half breed was silent as he spoke. It was obvious by the way he
spoke the word coyote that he didn't know what it was. Her neck
and shoulders went slack in her confusion. He had tried to kill her
because she was a half breed when he hadn't even known what her
other half was. What were the reasons that he hated half breeds so
much? She was sure that she would never find out; she hoped she
never found out.

Her face twisted as her spoke for the last time, her anger was
apparent. "I hope I never meet you again then." She
hissed the words but didn't stay to hear what he would say back, if
anything. She walked away, past the many bushels of berries
without eating a single one. She would not come back to this place,
this place was not the solitude she was looking for. She would
never be safe in this world. She would have to fight...But as much
as she wanted to be strong, her body shivered at the thought
of fighting. She wasn't a fighter. She wasn't strong enough.

She walked away, out of the shadowed land, out of the forest that
had been her home for less then a day. And then she was in a
field, a beautiful field. The urge to run or hide was great but she
wouldn't do it. She continued, walking into an unknown territory
that she feared more then anything.
